Many years ago at the University of Minnesota, there were two classes offered --- one in Communication and the other in Listening. The communication class was so popular that they had to expand it to three sections. The listening class was never given; not enough people signed up. Everybody wanted to learn how to talk; very few wanted to learn how to listen.

In order to create meaningful levels of employee engagement, listening has to be the foundation of a healthy communication initiative.
